Test Methods

Safe Pesticides &
Safe Products

Photograph of a woman in a laboratoryOver the past 30 years, EPA has developed an extensive arsenal of methods to test the health and environmental effects of chemicals. EPA researchers continue to refine these methods and to advance the science needed to assess the risks posed by chemicals, thousands of which must be tested annually. In particular, researchers are currently working to improve the guidelines concerning testing for toxicity to the neurological, immune, and reproductive systems and to improve the ability of scientists to interpret exposure and dose-response information.

Additionally, research is underway to assist in the setting of priorities so that testing resources can be utilized strategically and most effectively with a focus on commercial chemicals which pose the greatest potential risks. This work complements the Computational Toxicology Research Program which seeks to develop new tools for elucidating toxicity pathways and to develop predictive models which will help link chemical sources to outcomes.
