Computational Toxicology STAR Centers
- EPA's Science to Achieve Results or STAR program funds large research centers in specific areas of national concern.
- Right now, STAR is focusing on the health effects of particulate matter, drinking water, water quality, global change, ecosystem assessment and restoration, human health risk assessment, endocrine disrupting chemicals, pollution prevention and new technologies, children’s health, and socio-economic research.
- The STAR centers focusing on advancing Computational Toxicology include:
- New Jersey Research Center for Environmental Bioinformatics and Computational Toxicology
- The Carolina Environmental Bioinformatic Research Center
- Texas Indiana Virtual STAR Center
- This is a research partnership between the University of Houston, Texas A&M, Indiana University at Bloomington and EPA’s Computational Toxicology Research Program.
- This innovative research uses genetic and cellular methods to help build models that predict possible toxicity at the organism level. This approach relies on “computational toxicology” which integrates advances in molecular biology, chemistry and computer science to more effectively and efficiently assess chemical risks to humans and the environment.
- Researchers will further the development of computer models that could predict how chemicals interact with a fetus and lead to birth defects.
