U.S. EPA Technology Transfer Seminars

U.S. EPA's Office of Research and Development, in collaboration with EPA regional offices, is conducting a series of technology transfer seminars that will provide updated, state-of-the-technology design guidance on nitrogen and phosphorus control at municipal wastewater treatment plants for wastewater utilities, state and EPA permit writers and environmental engineering professionals. There is no registration fee to attend these seminars. Two seminars will be held in May 2010; one in Region 5 Chicago area and one in Region 10 Seattle area, with registration starting March 15, 2010 (see details below).

Background

The control of the discharge of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) from municipal wastewater treatment plants is critically important to the achievement of the water quality goals of the Clean Water Act. Through National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits, effluent limitations on the concentrations of nutrients are set to support designated uses, based on state water quality standards. To support the development and attainment of nutrient effluent requirements, these seminars will assist state and EPA permitting staff, engineering design professionals, and wastewater utility personnel to understand the most recent treatment technology advancements and the levels to which these technologies can reliably and cost-effectively remove these pollutants.

Agenda

The seminars will be held over two-days and include presentations on: environment impacts of nutrient containing effluents and emissions; related regulatory drivers for nutrient control; current state of control technology; emerging and innovative technologies; capital and O and M costs; local case studies; and research needs. In addition, Region 5 is planning a site tour to a local treatment plant showcasing new technologies at work.

Speakers

The agenda features presentations by well-known experts in the field, including Clifford Randall, James Barnard, David Stensel, and Jeannette Brown, as well as local case studies. EPA will also present information and updates on nutrient control regulations and regional initiatives.
