The Athens facility houses a state-of-the-art laboratory occupied by the Region 4 Science and Ecosystem Support Division.
Unique Environmental Features
Energy Conservation
- A nighttime setback at the SESD laboratory helped it achieve an energy savings of 7.8 percent in FY 2008 compared to an FY 2007 baseline.
- In FY 2008, the Agency completed a project to reprogram controls on all mechanical systems, including night and weekend setbacks, reset temperatures, and pressurization. The results of an energy assessment to quantify the energy savings from this project are expected by the end of FY 2010.
Green Power
- EPA offsets 100 percent of the electricity consumption at the SESD laboratory with renewable energy certificates (RECs) purchased through the Agency's current blanket green power contract. Learn more about EPA's current and past blanket green power contracts.
Water Conservation
- A condensate recovery project was completed in May 2008 to capture condensation that builds up and reuse the water as cooling tower make-up water. The facility anticipates saving 1 million gallons of water each year as a result of this project.
- EPA completed a water conservation assessment and developed a water management plan for the Athens SESD Laboratory (PDF) (192 pp, 405K, About PDF) in July 2006.
