This page provides links to shapefile downloads for designated 1997 8-hour Ozone, 1997 PM-2.5, 2006 PM-2.5, and 2008 Lead areas. The shapefiles include boundary information for all of the designated areas. External files are provided that contain the current nonattainment/maintenance status and classification for the designated areas. The shapefiles can be downloaded to a directory or disk by clicking on the links below.

Each shapefile is composed of multiple files and has been compressed into a self-extracting zip file. Each zipped file contains the following individual files, which must all be saved to be properly used by a mapping software:

shapefile.dbf: feature attributes
shapefile.prj: projection file
shapefile.sbn: spatial index of features
shapefile.sbx: spatial index of features
shapefile.shp: feature geometry
shapefile.shp.xml: metadata in XML format
shapefile.shx: shape index of the feature geometry

Additional information about the designated areas is available in the external 8-hour Ozone and PM-2.5 data files in both xbase (dbf) and spreadsheet (xls) formats. These data files are provided in a compressed self-extracting zip file along with the file "ExternalFileData.txt" which lists the area attributes in the external data files. The external data files can be linked to the shapefiles through the composID field in each file. When the downloaded external file is unzipped, it will create a directory called "shape" beneath the directory where the external zip file is located.

Note:

The compressed area shapefiles that can be downloaded below contain the boundary shapes for all areas designated nonattainment for a standard. The external data files contain the current area status information (as of the Green Book posted date), indicating the areas that have been redesignated to maintenance areas or reclassified since designation.

* Multi-state nonattainment areas are not considered maintenance areas until all states in the area have been redesignated.

To save the download file, click on the link. You will be given the choice of opening or saving the zipped files. Identify a directory for the zip file when prompted. If your browser loads the data onto the screen instead of asking you where to save the file, hit the back button, click on the file with your right mouse button, and select the save option (e.g., "Save Link As" in Firefox or "Save Target As" in Internet Explorer).

Each shapefile was created using ESRI's GIS mapping software and can be used by geospatial mapping applications that support the ESRI shapefile format. ArcView, ArcGIS, and ArcExplorer (ArcExplorer is free from ESRI) can be used to view the shapefiles. Commercial and free third party software is available that can be used to view shapefiles.
