Public Notice: Central Illinois Public Service Co. Superfund site – Five-Year Review in Process
Summary
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a five-year review of the Central Illinois Public Service Co. Superfund site in Taylorville, IL. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the sixth five-year review of this site.
Cleanup of VOCs and PAHs contamination at the site consisted of digging up contaminated soil down to the water table and sediments in the drainage swale; restoring excavated areas; constructing an on-site groundwater pump and treat (P&T) system and placing restrictions on future use of the site property. The cleanup also consisted of providing permanent alternative water supply to approximately 20 affected residents in October 1987, and plugged and abandoned associated private drinking water wells.
