Pollinator Protection: Coordination & Outreach
![]() |
Our interaction with pollinator researchers, beekeepers, and federal, state, and international partners has been very productive. The information we’ve learned from and shared with them makes us confident that our pollinator protection efforts are heading in the right direction.
In addition to many meetings we’ve had with stakeholders, beekeepers, environmental and public interest groups, and others, here are some of our other coordination and outreach efforts.
Presentations
- In July 2009, we hosted and provided presentations to a USDA-led meeting examining acute and chronic laboratory and field-based pollinator studies for determining the effects of pesticides on bees. The conference included university and government researchers studying the potential effects of pesticides on pollinators.
- At the January 6, 2010, American Honey Producers' Convention, we provided an update on EPA's roles in protecting pollinators, developing the science of assessing risks of pesticides to pollinators, developing strategies for managing risk to pollinators, and in communication/outreach.
- At the April 30, 2010, meeting of the Pesticide Program Dialogue Committee, we provided an update on the Pollinator Protection Team's activities (PDF) (18 pp, 53k, about PDF).
- In May 2010, EPA and the French Food Safety Agency made a joint presentation (PDF) (24 pp, 241k, about PDF) to the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, Europe (SETAC Europe) regarding uncertainties in risk assessment for insect pollinators.
Networking with Pollinator and Pesticide Experts
- EPA scientists are members of the Colony Loss network
, a global network of scientists, beekeepers, and industry members from 49 countries working to identify the factors causing severe colony losses. - We’re coordinating with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other government agencies to explore habitat conservation for pollinators.
- EPA is coordinating with the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (Cal DPR) and Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Authority (PMRA) on re-evaluation activities of certain neonicotinic pesticides being undertaken by each of these agencies.
- EPA is providing technical support to Cal DPR through protocol development and review of data required by Cal DPR.
- EPA, PMRA, and Cal DPR are coordinating data needs to provide information that is useful to all three agencies.
