Pesticide News Story: EPA Accepting Comments until August 9 on NMFS’ Draft Measures to Protect Endangered Pacific Salmon from 12 Pesticides
For Release: August 4, 2010
EPA and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) will consider all comments received by August 9, 2010, on draft mitigation measures suggested by NMFS in its draft Biological Opinion for 12 pesticides: azinphos methyl, bensulide, dimethoate, disulfoton, ethoprop, fenamiphos, methidathion, methamidophos, methyl parathion, naled, phorate, and phosmet. Because of deadlines resulting from the Washington Toxics Coalition lawsuits on federally listed threatened or endangered Pacific salmon and steelhead, EPA was only able to provide 53 days for public comment on these draft mitigation measures and is unable to extend the deadline. By August 9, EPA must submit all comments received as well as its own comments to NMFS so that NMFS may consider these comments and meet its legal deadline to issue the final Biological Opinion by August 31, 2010.
EPA and NMFS are collaborating in developing a plan to expand opportunities for stakeholder participation in the future during the Endangered Species Act consultation process.
