Pesticide News Story: Enable the Label On-line Discussion Forum Topic Extended: LRM Chapter 11: Directions for Use

For Release: June 2, 2011

Due to the length and complexity of our Enable the Label topic for May, Chapter 11 of the Label Review Manual (PDF) (32 pp, 1MB, about PDF), EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs is extending the discussion through June 30, 2011. On July 1, 2011 we will turn our attention to Chapter 12, Labeling Claims. Posts related to Chapter 11 will be available in a read-only version after June 30, 2011.

Enable the Label is our online discussion forum that helps us improve the clarity and usefulness for Label Review Manual users. The discussion topic for June is Chapter 11, which provides guidance for reviewing statements that instruct pesticide users how to apply products correctly. We are focusing on the enforceability of directions for use, application information, and improving the usefulness of Appendix A – the Directions for Use checklist. After the discussion thread closes at the end of June, we will review comments received and incorporate useful ones into future revisions of the Label Review Manual. As a reminder, for discussions focusing on the Label Review Manual, the Agency is not asking for general discussions on pesticide policy issues.

We created Enable the Label to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas related to pesticide labeling. Monthly discussions focus on one or two chapters of the Label Review Manual. Forum participants are welcome to post their thoughts and ideas on the topics and provide feedback on any other subject covered in that month's chapter. The goal is to improve the clarity and usefulness of the manual for its users -- primarily people who draft, review, or enforce labels in the field. Pesticide manufacturers and their representatives and State pesticide regulators may also use the manual.

Enable the Label provides informal comment opportunities to everyone interested in improving the Label Review Manual, and encourages creative solutions to complex pesticide label challenges in an open and transparent environment.

We invite you to regularly submit your comments and comment on others' ideas at http://blog.epa.gov/enablethelabel/.
