Pesticide News Story: Improving Regulation and Regulatory Review -- Conference Call with Pesticide Program Dialogue Committee (public invited to listen)

For Release: March 8, 2011

Thursday, March 10, 2011, 2:00 -- 4:00 pm Eastern
Call-in Number 1 866 299-3188 Conference Code 703 308 4775 #

The President signed an Executive Order in January directing each Federal agency to consider “how best to promote retrospective analysis of rules that may be outmoded, ineffective, insufficient, or excessively burdensome.” Every government agency, including the Environmental Protection Agency, is being asked to develop “a preliminary plan, consistent with law and its resources and regulatory priorities, under which the agency will periodically review its existing significant regulations to determine whether such regulations should be modified, streamlined, expanded or repealed to make the agency’s regulatory program more effective and/or less burdensome in achieving its regulatory objectives.” The public is being invited to offer input on Agency regulations through multiple forums. Individuals or groups may submit comments either on-line, until March 20, or by participating in a public meeting chaired by Administrator Jackson in Arlington, VA, on March 14th. Details about how to participate in this process are available on EPA’s website at http://www.epa.gov/improvingregulations. The Administrator plans to provide the public with a retrospective review plan by late May 2011.

In addition, the Administrator has asked EPA's program offices to provide additional opportunities for comment. Therefore, we have scheduled a conference call with the PPDC as a way to get feedback from our stakeholder community regarding existing pesticide rules, those under development, and areas for possible future regulatory activity. PPDC members are being asked to include an explanation as to why they believe a regulation should be modified, streamlined, expanded, or repealed, with supporting data, and suggestions on how we can better achieve the regulatory program’s objective. The information we receive will be incorporated in the Agency’s broader review. The following list of pesticide regulations (PDF) (6 pp, 132K, about PDF) currently under development is available on EPA's website.

Interested members of the public are welcome to listen in on this conference call scheduled for March 10th at the call-in number listed above. All existing regulations can be found in 40 CFR Parts 150-189 (the Table of Contents provides a list).
