The Design for the Environment (DfE) Program forms voluntary partnerships with industry and other stakeholders to incorporate environmental considerations -- especially Green Chemistry -- into the design of products (www.epa.gov/dfe). The Program conducts hazard-based Chemical Alternatives Assessment for Agency Priority Chemicals, and allows use of EPA's DfE logo on more sustainable products that meet stringent criteria. Created in 1992, DfE is working with industry and other relevant stakeholders to:- conduct hazard-based Chemical Alternatives Assessments and Life Cycle Assessments;
- develop criteria that defines safer chemistry by functional class based on hazard characteristics;
- explore safer chemistry for the electronics industry;
- find safer flame retardants for a range of applications, including autos, airplanes buildings, and furniture;
- work with companies to develop safer chemical products, such as cleaning products for home and industrial use.
