Ethics Training for Members and Consultants Serving on the HSRB
Dr. Sean Philpott is Director of Research Ethics for the Bioethics Program of Union Graduate College and the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in Schenectady, NY. In that role, Dr. Philpott develops and teaches courses in research ethics and also coordinates Union Graduate College’s Fogarty-funded Advanced Certificate Program in Research Ethics for Central and Eastern Europe. He received his undergraduate degrees in biology and medical anthropology from the University of California at San Diego. He also holds a Ph.D. in Public Health Microbiology from the University of California at Berkeley School of Public Health, and a Masters of Science in Bioethics from Union Graduate College. Prior to joining the Union Graduate College faculty full-time, Dr. Philpott was Science and Ethics Officer at PATH, an international nonprofit organization that develops, tests and distributes new technologies designed to address global health problems. His past positions include Associate Professor of Medicine at Albany Medical College, Associate Director of the Alden March Bioethics Institute, and Executive Editor of the award-winning American Journal of Bioethics. He also worked for ten years as a tenured Research Scientist and Public Health Officer with the New York State Department of Health, served on the New York State Department of Health Institutional Review Board and the New York State Working Group on Bioethics, and consulted with various governmental and non-governmental bodies, such as the Forum for Collaborative HIV Research.
