2009 Schools Chemical Cleanout Campaign Recognition Event
On October 22, 2009 EPA recognized eleven Schools Chemical Cleanout Campaign (SC3) volunteers for their outstanding efforts to protect children where they learn. Collectively, these eleven SC3 volunteers removed over 70,000 pounds of outdated, unknown, unneeded, and in some cases, highly hazardous chemicals from approximately 300 K-12 schools across the country. In addition to chemical removal, these volunteers provided other services to schools including:
- Promoting micro-scale and green chemistry in classrooms;
- Providing technical assistance (e.g., chemical inventory assistance, chemical storage guidance); and
- Providing education and training opportunities to teachers, staff, and administrators in chemical safety and responsible chemical management.
The event opened with taped remarks from Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, who noted that October is Children’s Health Month and a perfect time to recognize SC3 volunteers for their contribution to creating safer learning environments.
The eleven SC3 volunteers recognized at the event include:
- Alabama Department of Environmental Management
- Ash Grove Cement Company
