Electronics Challenge
The WasteWise Electronics Challenge encourages Partners to reuse, upgrade, or remanufacture electronics waste.
Electronic equipment becomes outdated quickly. Extending the life of electronic products can reduce disposal costs and provide potential tax write-offs.
Through the Electronics Challenge, 34 WasteWise Partners pledged to reduce electronic waste. WasteWise recognized Jackson State University Computer Recycling Program, Panasonic, Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc., and Pepco for their outstanding electronics waste reduction efforts at the 2004 Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony.
Steps to Reduce Electronic Waste
Examples of electronic product waste reduction activities include:
- Donating reusable electronic equipment to schools or other nonprofit organizations.
- Buying remanufactured equipment instead of new equipment.
- Contracting with suppliers to lease electronics.
- Recycling equipment from your organization that cannot be reused.
Electronic product manufacturers might also consider other options, such as:
- Redesigning an electronic product so that it can be more easily upgraded or remanufactured.
- Establishing a take-back program for electronic products from customers, and remanufacture or upgrade these products for resale.
