For answers to users' questions on MOVES, see our "Frequent Questions" page.

Tips before installation

  1. Please verify that you have administrative rights on your computer.  Several MOVES tools require administrative rights to install and run.  Ask your technical support group for help with any problem of administrative rights.
  2. The Java and MySQL installers are intended for computers that do not currently have Java or MySQL installed.  If you are running older versions of MySQL and Java, you will need to upgrade your software packages.  MOVES is developed in Java 1.4.2 and will not work with later versions of java without code modification.  MOVES has been tested with MySQL 5.0.27, but not yet been tested in version 5.1 and beyond.
  3. Special notes pertaining to Windows Vista operating system:
    • MOVES on Vista has not been fully tested.
    • MySQL/Sun has just released MySQL 5.1 that supports Windows 64-bit platforms, and there're reports of successfully installing it on 64-bit Vista machines.  However installing MOVES on a 64-bit machine (Vista or XP) is not supported by EPA at this time because EPA has not yet completed the required tests. Please also be advised that the MySQL 5.0.27, which is included within this install package, can not be installed on 64-bit Windows platforms (Vista or XP).
    • Users should be able to install MOVES and its components/tools on a 32-bit Vista machine.  This readme file includes information on installing MOVES system on a 32-bit Vista machine. After installation, please be advised that currently EPA is unable to provide further support for Vista users.  EPA expects to support "MOVES on Vista" after Vista has become part of EPA IT OS standards.
  4. According MySQL/Sun (for detail see http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/windows-installation.html Exit EPA disclaimer)
    • Using virus scanning software such as Norton/Symantec Anti-Virus on directories containing MySQL data and temporary tables can cause issues, both in terms of the performance of MySQL and the virus-scanning software mis-identifying the contents of the files as containing spam.  This is because of the fingerprinting mechanism used by the virus scanning software, and the way in which MySQL rapidly updates different files, which may be identified as a potential security risk.
    • After installing MySQL Server, it is recommended that you disable virus scanning on the main directory (datadir) being used to store your MySQL table data.  There is usually a system built into the virus scanning software to allow certain directories to be specifically ignored during virus scanning.
    • By default, MySQL creates temporary files in the standard Windows temporary directory.  To prevent the temporary files also being scanned, you should configure a separate temporary directory for MySQL temporary files and add this to the virus scanning exclusion list.  To do this, add a configuration option for the tmpdir parameter to your my.ini configuration file.  For more information, see Section 2.3.7, "Creating an Option File".

Please consult with your technical support group about any above-mentioned problem(s).

Installation

Please install the MOVES tools in the following order.  If you are installing from a CD, these instructions point you to directories which contain the executable installation programs; if you have downloaded the installation materials from the EPA web site the executable installation programs will be located where you placed the downloads.

Windows Vista

  1. Skip this section and jump to "Java 1.4.2" section if you are not using Vista.
  2. If you have 64-bit Vista or XP running on your machine, MySQL 5.0.27 in this install package may not be installed correctly.
You will need to install MySQL 5.1 or a later version instead (the install executable and instructions for MySQL version 5.1 are not included in this package).
  3. If you have 32-bit Vista running on your machine, follow the instructions in Vista_Security_Disable_Instructions.pdf, which should be located at \MySQL5 directory on CD or at the location where you download the MySQL Installer.

Java 1.4.2

  1. If you are installing from a CD, go to the directory Java 1.4.2.
  2. Double click on the Java SDK installer
    (j2sdk-1_4_2_03-windows-i586-p.exe).
  3. Follow the installer's instructions.

MySQL 5.0

  1. Open MySQL5Setup.pdf by using Adobe Reader (you need to consult it while installing MySQL 5). The pdf file should be in \MySQL5 directory on CD or at the location where you download the MySQL Installer.
  2. Open a DOS command prompt by going to the start menu, clicking on run, typing cmd and hitting enter. if you don't see "run" on start menu, go to Start/Programs/Accessories, then select "Command Prompt".
  3. Change directory to MySQL directory "MySQL5". For example, if you are using an install CD on D drive, type
    < br>
  4. Type
    setup.exe     <<Press Enter key>>
  5. Refer to MySQL5Setup.pdf and follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. After completion, exit MySQL 5 setup.exe program if it does not automatically exit.
  7. Return to DOS command prompt (should be in directory "MySQL5")

MySQL Connection ODBC 3.51
(optional tool for other applications (e.g., MS ACCESS) to access MySQL data)

  1. If you are installing from a CD, go to the directory MySQL Connection ODBC 3.51.
  2. Double click on the installer (mysql-connector-odbc-3.51.14-win32.msi).
  3. Follow the installer's instructions

MySQL Query Browser
(optional but recommended; a user-friendly GUI tool for manipulating commands and data)

  1. If you are installing from a CD, go to the directory MySQL Query Browser.
  2. Double click on the installer (mysql-gui-tools-5.0-r16-win32.msi).
  3. Follow the installer's instructions.
  4. Note: When running after installation, the MySQL Query Browser will prompt for a server name, user name, password, etc. On a clean system with MySQL recently installed, simply enter "localhost" for the server name and click "OK".  Another popup will then appear complaining that a "default schema" has not been selected.  The complaint indicates MySQL is asking for the name of the database to use when first opening the browser.  You may select a database from the MYSQL\data folder, or just click Ignore.

MOVES

  1. If you are installing from a CD, go to the MOVES directory.
  2. Double click on MOVESInstallationPackage.jar to start the installer.
(Note: If any archiver tool is installed on your machine, double-clicking on the above .jar file may not work correctly.  For example, instead of starting automatically, the .jar is opened by WinRAR or EasyZip200 without further action.  To fix this problem, right-click on the .jar file, choose "Java(TM) Platform SE binary" from "Open With".  Alternatively, the following Java command can be used to launch the installer: java -jar MOVESInstallationPackage.jar)
  3. Follow the installer's instructions.
