Many Machines for Many Jobs - Characterization of Today's Nonroad Diesel Industry
- Nonroad diesel equipment is used in a wide variety of applications
including construction, farming, industrial, and airport services.
- Unlike other categories of mobile emission sources, the nonroad
diesel category applies to a very broad range of engine sizes,
types of equipment, and power ratings.
- Engine horsepower ranges from 3 to over 3,000 horsepower.
- The equipment in which these engines are used is extremely
diverse, with often the same engine being used in widely varying
equipment applications.
- For example, the same engine used in a backhoe can also
be used in a drill rig or in an air compressor.
- Approximately 50 companies manufacture nonroad diesel engines
worldwide. Many companies involved in the nonroad diesel industry
are not "vertically integrated" - that is, they do not
produce both engines and the equipment applications that the engines
are used in. We have reflected this reality in the implementation
of the Clean Air Nonroad Diesel Rule, which will ensure that both
engine manufacturers and equipment manufacturers are able to provide
clean new nonroad machines to end-users on schedule.
- The applications of nonroad diesel engines vary broadly depending
on the size of the engine. Below are common applications for each
of the major nonroad diesel engine size categories (in horsepower
[hp]):
- 0 to 25 hp: Refrigeration/air-conditioning units, commercial
mowers, mobile welders
- 25 to 75 hp: Bulldozers, fork lifts, agricultural tractors
- 75 to 175 hp: Tractors, backhoes, excavators
- 175 to 750 hp: Tractors, combines, road graders
- Above 750 hp: Generator sets, off-highway trucks, crawlers
- Nonroad diesel equipment is used to perform a wide range of
work in many sectors of the economy.
- Over 650,000 pieces of nonroad diesel equipment covered by
this rule are sold in the United States per year. There are about
6 million pieces of nonroad diesel equipment currently in use.
