Roehl Transport has a culture that includes minimizing fuel consumption and limiting exhaust emissions. After becoming a SmartWay Partner, Roehl switched its fleet to synthetic motor oil, equipped its tractors with wide based single tires, and doubled the number of its test tractors equipped with auxiliary power units. All new Roehl tractors put into service are equipped with direct fired heaters and cab extenders which increase tractor-trailer aerodynamics. Roehl Transport controls vehicle speed by setting the maximum speed to 65 miles per hour. Roehl is also committed to driver training to help reduce idling, with monthly reviews of idle percentages for each driver. Finally, Roehl Transport promotes SmartWay through its trade show booths, corporate newsletters, and news network CDs that update employees and customers on what is happening within the company.

“Since becoming a SmartWay Transport carrier, Roehl has become more knowledgeable about greenhouse gas emissions. Striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions usually results in lower energy consumption which leads to lower operating costs.”

— Phil Trierweiler, Vice President, Maintenance
