Environmental Effects:
Challenges

We all want a strong and vital economy.  But, as the economy has grown, so too has the amount of goods shipped and miles traveled by ground freight transportation.  Additionally, just-in-time manufacturing, faster delivery services, and continually increasing Internet purchasing have added increased mileage to ground transportation.  Despite advances in truck and rail technology, the dramatic increases in mileage mean even greater consumption of fuel and therefore, greater emissions of greenhouse gases and harmful air pollutants.  By 2012, based on current trends, ground freight transportation will consume over 45 billion gallons of diesel fuel and produce over 450 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.  These levels represent an increase of over 25% compared to today’s levels.
