What are SmartWay Certified PassengerVehicles?

Each vehicle listed in EPA's Green Vehicle Guide receives an Air Pollution Score and a Greenhouse Gas Score, on a scale of 1-10.

For the SmartWay designation, a vehicle must receive better than average scores on both scales. The air pollution and greenhouse gas scoring thresholds and SmartWay criteria are assessed annually in an effort to maintain our goal of designating the top 20 percent of vehicles every model year as SmartWay certified. Vehicles that receive the SmartWay certification are very good environmental performers relative to other vehicles.

SmartWay Elite is given to those vehicles that attain the highest scores on both scales. The SmartWay Elite certification is reserved for the best environmental performers.
