Overviews and Highlights
The Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program lists freshwater inflows, habitat restoration and habitat preservation among its top objectives. These estuaries are located in a semi-arid region and are subject to the growing needs of a large city. In addition to a lack of rainfall, water from rivers and streams that would otherwise flow to the estuary is diverted for residential, industrial, and agricultural uses. This NEP focuses on maintaining freshwater inflows that mimic rainfall and contribute to productive estuaries. Work continues on a system of pumps and pipes that puts freshwater into the estuaries.
Habitat restoration work includes: ongoing efforts to restore water circulation throughout 15,000 acres to revive the marshes on Matagorda Island, and plans to create about 150 acres of marsh along the Nueces Bay Causeway.
CBBEP also is committed to habitat preservation, purchasing about 5,400 acres of land around the Nueces River Delta for conservation, education and study sites.
