Status of Actual/Anticipated Residue Tolerance Review Process
Quick Resources
As of October 31, 2012, EPA has screened dietary assessments for 287 pesticides or pesticide groupings with tolerance decisions made between August 1996 and the end of Fiscal Year 2009 (September 30, 2009). The Agency has determined that 277 continue to meet the FQPA safety standard and the next scheduled review for these chemicals will be conducted as part of the Registration Review process.
Further review is necessary for the remaining ten chemicals or chemical groups: chlorpropham, imazalil, iprodione, triadimefon, triademenol, thiophanate-methyl and four cumulative groups. For many of the ten chemicals or chemical groups, new risk assessments are being conducted, risk assessments have been completed recently for other purposes, or more comprehensive risk assessments are planned. Consequently, the Agency decided to defer its final determination for these chemicals until the risk assessments are completed and any new risk management decisions are made. New assessments are conducted using the most recent monitoring data and risk assessment methodologies.
The tables below list the 287 reviewed chemicals or chemical groups according to the year the original tolerance decision was made. The table for 2009 contains recently reviewed chemicals, whereas the remaining tables reflect reviews conducted in previous years. EPAs goal is to complete its screening review approximately three years after the initial tolerance decisions. For example, by the end of 2013, all of the 2010 initial assessments will be screened and review determinations will be completed for most of the chemicals.

1Because the highest dietary risk is fairly low (17% of the aPAD), it is unlikely that changes in residues detected in monitoring studies would increase to the extent that the dietary risks would increase to near the level of concern even if use increased significantly. Therefore, the next scheduled review will be during the registration review process.
2Because the highest dietary risk is fairly low (13% of the aPAD), it is unlikely that changes in residues detected in monitoring studies would increase to the extent that the dietary risks would increase to near the level of concern even if use increased significantly. Therefore, the next scheduled review will be during the registration review process.
3Because the PDP residue levels used in the risk assessment are much lower than the field trial data levels, it is unlikely that new monitoring data would increase risk to above the LOC.
4Because the highest dietary risk is fairly low (34% of the cPAD), it is unlikely that changes in residues detected in monitoring studies would increase to the extent that the dietary risks would increase to near the level of concern even if use increased significantly. Therefore, the next scheduled review will be during the registration review process.
5Because the tolerance level is well below the level that is generally regarded as safe (GRAS), dietary is not likely to be of exposure of concern.
6 New data currently being evaluated.
7 The dietary risk from this group of chemicals is very low (< of the PAD). However, because the most widely used of these chemicals is undergoing extensive peer review, the AR review will be deferred.

8Because the highest dietary risk is fairly low (42% of the aPAD) and monitoring data were PDP residues in milk, it is unlikely that changes in residues detected in monitoring studies would increase to the extent that the dietary risks would increase to near the level of concern even if use increased significantly. Therefore, the next scheduled review will be during the registration review process.
9Use of PDP and older MBS data continues to be protective because use patterns have not changed in such a way that would significantly increase dietary exposure.

24The Captan RED that was approved in November 1999 included the initial tolerance decision. Over the period from 1994-2003, total use has declined, particularly for high consumption foods such as apples. PDP monitoring data indicate similar or lower residue levels than those used for the initial assessment. Also, the highest acute risk is 36% of the PAD, the highest cPAD is <2%, and cancer risk is 1.3 X 10-7. Based on the stable use, stable or declining residues in available monitoring data and the portion of the risk cup available, the Agency believes that that residue levels used in its initial assessment would not increase in a way that would alter its initial safety finding. Therefore, the review is complete. Next scheduled review will be completed during registration review.
25The Dicofol RED that was approved in December 1999 included the initial tolerance decision. For acute risks, EPA only used study data and as such, the review is complete. However, extensive monitoring data were used for the chronic risk assessment used in making the safety determinations for existing tolerances. Over the period from 1994-2003, total use has remained stable, particularly for high consumption foods. PDP monitoring data indicate similar or lower residue levels than those used for the initial assessment. Also, the highest chronic risk is 38% of the PAD for children 1-6 years old. Commodities (apples and grapes) commonly consumed for this age group have stable use.
26A 2009 risk assessment indicates no risk of concern using tolerance and 100% crop treated.

27New assessment completed in support of tolerance decision for snow peas in 2007. Because the highest estimated dietary risk is low (8% of the cPAD), it is unlikely that changes in residues detected in monitoring studies would increase to the extent that estimated dietary risks would increase to near the level of concern even if use increased significantly. Therefore, the next scheduled review will be during the registration review process.
28New assessment is being conducted. Final decision regarding the anticipated residue review will be made after the current action is completed.
