Federal Entities Agree to Pay Fine, Reduce Pollution to Settle Underground Storage Tank Violations at Puerto Rico Facility
The Puerto Rico Army National Guard and the Army & Air Force Exchange Service will together pay a $69,000 fine and ensure the underground storage tanks (UST) at their Camp Santiago facility in Salinas, P.R. comply with Puerto Rico UST requirements. The Guard will also install a system to conserve water and reduce pollution at the facility, estimated to cost $670,000. The Puerto Rico Army National Guard and the Army & Air Force Exchange Service have taken responsibility for their failure to comply with the law, and are working not just to comply, but also use water more efficiently and prevent pollution at Camp Santiago,” said EPA Acting Regional Administrator George Pavlou. “Underground tanks can cause serious damage as they leak, and it is critical that all entities, including the federal government properly manage them.”

Superfund Site Delisting Returns Once Contaminated Land to Community for Reuse and Redevelopment
EPA has finalized its decision to remove approximately 2900 acres of property, on the former Griffiss Air Force Base from the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). For these areas, all appropriate Superfund cleanup work has been completed, and the properties pose no significant threat to public health or the environment. Remediation efforts will continue on other portions of the base, which will remain on the NPL. “Since the beginning of the cleanup program in 1987, reuse and redevelopment have been a goal that everyone has been working to achieve at Griffiss,” said Walter Mugdan, Director of Emergency & Remedial Response Division for Region 2 of EPA. “The cleanup actions taken, and now the transfer of a significant amount of property to the community, are examples of Superfund at its best, and we are proud to have partnered with New York State and the Air Force in reaching this milestone.”
