EPA added the Hercules, Inc. site in Gibbstown, New Jersey to the Superfund National Priorities List on September 1, 1983 because hazardous chemicals were found in the soil and ground water. The 350-acre superfund site, located in Gloucester County contains a facility that manufactures organic hydroxide and peroxide. The Hercules, Inc. plant discarded its solid waste in two unlined disposal pits. Clonmell Creek flows through the site and runs into the Delaware River. Approximately 13,000 people live within a three mile radius of the site. Residents are served by municipal water wells.
The ground water was found to be contaminated with lead and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are potentially harmful chemicals can evaporate into the air. Soil was found to be contaminated with VOCs and heavy metals including lead. The contamination at the Hercules, Inc. site is being addressed in two long-term cleanup phases. Monitoring wells have been constructed in the site area. Hercules, under State monitoring, is pumping and treating contaminated ground water. Solid waste disposal areas will also be cleaned, and a cap will be installed once the cleanup activities are complete.
