Radioactive Waste Management: Overview

EPA's primary role in waste management is to set public health and environmental radiation protection standards, provide information to assist waste generators, and provide information to the general public.

WIPP Oversight
This section describes the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant and EPA's role in setting radiation protection standards and overseeing this U.S. Department of Energy storage facility for low-level and transuranic radioactive waste.

Yucca Mountain Standards
This section describes EPA's public health and environmental radiation protection standards for Yucca Mountain, Nevada, the proposed U.S. Department of Energy repository for spent fuel and high-level radioactive waste.

Mixed Waste
This information describes wastes that contain both radioactively and chemically hazardous material and EPA's regulation of them.

'Low-Activity' Radioactive Waste
This section describes the characteristics of "low-activity" radioactive waste and EPA's request for consideration of safe management options for it.
