90% of people who live in the Mid-Atlantic Region drink water from public systems regulated by EPA and the States.

The vast majority of the Mid-Atlantic Region's small public water systems (with a population greater than 25 and less than 3,300) rely on ground water for their source of drinking water. Likewise, most people who are not on a public system get their drinking water from groundwater and private wells. Larger systems can also pull their water from streams, rivers, springs or lakes.

News about Drinking Water in the Mid Atlantic

Safe Disposal of Medicine and Supplements in Frederick County – The Mid Atlantic Region's Office of Drinking Water and Source Water Protection partnered with EPA's Office of Water and the Frederick County Department of Aging to implement a pilot program in Frederick, MD focusing on proper disposal of unwanted pharmaceuticals. Seniors were selected as the focus audience for the pilot with a kick-off event at the Frederick County Annual Elder Expo, where over 300 participants learned the importance and techniques of disposing of unwanted medicines, vitamins and supplements properly. The goal is to keep unwanted or expired medicines from being flushed or poured down the drain and from potentially reaching the region’s rivers and streams. Other events are planned in Frederick County with the potential to expand the program to a wider audience in other areas in the Potomac River Basin. This work supports Goal 2 of EPA's Strategic Plan: Clean and Safe Water.
