Success Stories

Here are a few examples of how organizations can reduce operating costs and/or help to improve the environment and lead us to a more sustainable future!

EPA Green Power Partnership Logo

Philadelphia Phillies purchased 20 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy certificates in 2008—enough to power 100% of the annual electricity use at Citizens Park.  The green power purchase avoided the equivalent carbon dioxide emissions of ~2,800 vehicles!

EPEAT LogoPenn State University and the Pennsylvania Dept. of General Services purchased 73,110 Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) registered environmentally friendly laptops, desktops and monitors during 2008.  These purchases resulted in reduced energy usage of 84 million kWh.  The savings would power 7,070 households for one year and a resulted in the reduction of 13 tons of toxic material, including lead and mercury being released into the environment.

Green Suppliers Network LogoGreen Suppliers Network worked with McNeil-PPC Inc, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson and identified ways to reduce annual waste by an estimated 200,000 gallons, annual water savings of 40,000 gallons and estimated cost savings of $250,000 on one product line.

NPEP LogoGE Energy implemented a process change to recycle rather than dispose of 2400 lbs of waste material containing 145 lbs of lead.  Recycling this material was 48% less costly than disposal and GE Energy was re-classified from a large to a small hazardous waste generator.

Climate Leaders LogoPfizer Inc., a charter partner in Climate Leaders, exceeded its goal in Greenhouse Gases (GHG) reductions from 2000—2007 by achieving a 43% reduction in GHG per million dollars of revenue.

Energy Star Partner LogoMarriott International, Inc. saved $1.3 million in 2008 as a result of ongoing energy management techniques.
