2009 Gulf of Mexico Success Stories
- Tangipahoa, Bogue Falaya and Tchefuncte Rivers in Louisiana Come Off Impaired List
Gulf of Mexico Program Office (GMPO) grant funding, especially in the key early years, helped the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation (LPBF) clean up the Tangipahoa River. The Tangipahoa is being delisted from being an impaired waterbody along with the Bogue Falaya and Tchefuncte. According to Dr. Andrea Bourgeois-Calvin of the LPBF, "Gulf of Mexico funding led to a full blown Targeted Watershed project in the Tangipahoa watershed. Work begun under GMPO funding also led to dramatic reductions in fecal coliform on the Bogue Falaya and Tchefuncte rivers as well as the LPBF writing a 'Watershed Protection Plan' on those waterways. One of our biggest successes using GMPO funding has been getting Lake Pontchartrain removed from the Impaired Waterbodies List." The Gulf of Mexico Program is one of the partners in the Gulf Of Mexico Alliance that provided funding to help clean up these rivers. The water from these rivers ultimately ends up in the Gulf of Mexico. Please read the below related articles from the Hammond, La, Daily Star and The New Orleans Times Picayune.
