The Nonpoint Source Management Program
South Carolina uses the watershed approach to address water quality problems caused by nonpoint source (NPS) pollution. This approach allows communities to focus resources on a watershed;s most serious water quality problems. Emphasis is placed on implementing projects that address specific NPS impairments in priority waterbodies/watersheds.
The State developed and began implementing a comprehensive Nonpoint Source Management Program in 1990 and has received more than $45,000,000 in grant funding through Section 319 of the Clean Water Act. The grant awards are supplemented by a 40% nonfederal match form the State.
