Law Clerks

Background Questionnaire

If you are applying for this position, we ask for your voluntary cooperation in filling out a short online questionnaire. The information will remain confidential and will not be used as a factor in the evaluation of your application.

We operate a small summer law clerk program. For our summer 2012 program, we expect to have two to four second year law students participate in our 10-week program. Our summer law clerk program generally begins in late May or early June.

Summer law clerk applications (cover letter, resume, and law school transcript) should be submitted electronically by October 15, 2011. Please email your complete application package to r9orcsummer@epa.gov. Interviews will be conducted by telephone in November, and it is expected that final decisions will be made in December 2011 or January 2012. A writing sample will be requested prior to all interviews.

If you are a veteran, please include in your application appropriate documentation such as DD214 (copy 4), your VA letter, or Standard Form-15 (disabled veteran).

Documents may be attached in Word, WordPerfect, or PDF formats.

If our budget does not allow us to provide paid clerkships, we may ask students to come as volunteers, in which case they may wish to defray costs by seeking grants from their law schools. If our budget permits, paid clerkships will be offered at a rate of GS-9 Step 1 for law students entering their third year. (Visit Office of Personnel Management Exiting EPA (disclaimer) for the most current federal locality pay table for the San Jose/San Francisco area).

If you have questions, please email your inquiry to r9orcsummer@epa.gov.

Interns

During the school year, we accept law students as volunteer interns receiving credit in connection with a clinical program. If you have questions, please contact Robert Moyer (moyer.robert@epa.gov), Acting Deputy Regional Counsel at (415) 972-3877.
