Emergency response at Ayer Tire Fire, Ayer, Mass.

The Ayer Tire fire started at about 4:00 a.m. Aug. 2, 2010, off Willow Road in a rural section of Ayer. Fire departments from eight surrounding towns responded to the incident. The Mass. Department of Environmental Protection requested EPA technical assistance to ensure that water resources were not damaged from the firefighting wastewater and foam. DEP and EPA observed the surface water drainage structures, such as ditches with check dams, the settling pond, and boom deployments, and no oil was seen beyond the settling pond.
