Waste Site Cleanup & Reuse in New England

S. Bent Furniture Co.

The S. Bent Furniture Co. is located in a mixed residential and industrial area and is bordered to the south by Mill Street and commercial properties, to the east by Winter Street, and to the north and west by residential and commercial properties. There is an approximate 130,000 square foot four-story warehouse and manufacturing building with sections of roof failure abandoned on the site. In addition, portions of the heating system and piping within the facility were insulated with asbestos containing material, and there were suspected solvents, lacquers, and paints used for finishing the furniture stockpile also located on site. The building once was used for painting and varnishing furniture produced by the S. Bent Furniture Company; however, now it is in disrepair and contains asbestos pipe wrap and tile as well as numerous drums and containers. It was not secured so there was an exposure risk to asbestos and potentially hazardous materials used in furniture manufacturing.

In 2008, a site investigation was conducted by an environmental contractor on behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. A total of 106 samples were collected for bulk asbestos analysis. The results indicated asbestos in block and air cellpipe insulation, flashing, caulk/gaskets, and floor and ceiling tile. In January 2011, EPA conducted a site investigation in the building and collected 15 samples for bulk asbestos analysis. Asbestos was detected in five of the samples, and a large number of paint and lacquers were observed. In October, EPA began asbestos removal on the building's first, second floors and third floors, including glove-bagging sections of pipe-wrap. Asbestos removal also was done in the boiler room that is located on the western side of the building. In addition, EPA removed and disposed of the containers of lacquers, stains, paints, mercury switches, bulbs, PCB ballast and corrosives.
