Waste Site Cleanup & Reuse in New England
Somers Plating Inc.
The site consists of about 3.6 acres of land with two unoccupied one-story buildings in a mixed residential/commercial neighborhood. The site was formerly operated as a metal workshop/plating facility, a gasoline station, an ecumenical school, and a daycare center. Two unknown former metal hydroxide sludge lagoons associated with the plating operation are onsite. Underground storage tanks reportedly used by the gasoline station were removed.
In July 2004, EPA investigated the site and then did a cleanup. A total of 17,167 gallons of contaminated water was treated. From Sept. 27 to Dec. 7, 2005, 3,639 tons of contaminated soil with cadmium concentrations greater than 100 ppm was shipped off site and 5,126 tons of contaminated soil with cadmium concentration less than 100 ppm was shipped to a different facility for disposal. The wetlands and other part of the site disturbed by the cleanup were restored.
