Re: Voluntary Discovery and Disclosure of Potential Environmental Violations Letter
Greetings:
As we announced in our previous mailing to you, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 2 is planning to conduct inspections of colleges and universities within our region (New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, & U.S. Virgin Islands) during the upcoming year to determine their compliance with hazardous waste and other environmental regulations.
In response to numerous requests for more compliance assistance material, we have assembled a list of Internet sites that may be helpful. Please see the attached fact sheet, "Compliance Assistance Internet Sites for Colleges & Universities." We would especially recommend the Environmental Compliance Audit Protocols site. In addition, our regional Internet Pollution Prevention (P2) site, at http://www.epa.gov/region02/p2, provides links to university and college information through the P2 Resources link. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Pollution Prevention Unit, under a EPA grant, is providing outreach to campus-based organizations this spring/summer. Self-assessment and compliance assistance documents that have been developed for campus-based organizations are available by contacting Laurie Rizzo, Environmental Program Specialist, at (518) 457-2553, or the Pollution Prevention Unit Internet site at http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/ppu.
I would urge you to take advantage of the EPA's Audit Policy to identify any violations and to voluntarily correct them prior to our inspecting colleges and universities in the spring of the year 2000. If you have questions or need more information, would like to participate in an informational meeting, please contact John Wilk, Self-Disclosure Policy Coordinator, at (212) 637-3918.
Sincerely yours,
George C. Meyer, P.E.
