At Our Environmental Science Center

Goals are developed for two-year periods. These are taken out of the workplans developed by each workgroup.

Overall we want to:

  1. Reduce our use of gasoline, electricity, paper, and other resources
  2. Increase recycling and the purchase of recycled and other "green" products

2009 to 2011 EMS Goals
Objective
Target
1) Reduce Gasoline Use and Air Emissions  Make 75% of our vehicle acquisitions meet Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFV) requirements 
Increase Alternative Fuel consumption 10% annually, from FY 2005 baseline
Reduce petroleum use 2% annually from our FY 2005 baseline
Baseline the number of our employees participating in our alternative transportation programs
2) Reduce Electricity and Water Use Reduce GHG Emissions and Energy use by identifying and implementing at least one energy conservation project each year
Incorporate sustainable practices called for by the Guiding Principles
3) Reduce Paper Use Baseline the post-consumer (PC) content of all our paper
Make 100% of our paper have at least 50% Post Consumer Content 
Baseline the number of our duplex-capable printers, copiers, etc.
4) Reduce Solid, Chemical and Electronic Waste Verify our 2006 baseline solid waste diversion rate 
Determine the percentage of our solid waste that is recycled or reused
Determine targets and metrics to achieve a 45% waste diversion rate by 2010
Identify and implement at least one waste reduction and recycling project
Maintain our Federal Electronic Challenge requirements and timeframes
5) Increase the Purchase of Green Products Determine the number of Affirmative Procurement Program (APP) reviews, reports, and/or corrective actions done under our office Quality Assurance Plan (QAP)
Determine the number of acquisition staff trained in agency APP
Maintain our office contracting QAP to include all current APP
Where available, 95% of electronic product purchases should be Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT)
