EPA To Hold Public Meeting Regarding Perflourochemical Contamination Near Decatur, AL
(Atlanta, Ga. – November 18, 2009) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will host a public availability session and meeting Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at the Moulton Recreation Center in Moulton, Ala., to share information with residents about the status of the investigation of perflourochemical contamination from biosolids applied to agricultural fields near Decatur, Ala. EPA Soliciting Applications for Environmental Justice Grant Funding
(ATLANTA – Nov. 5, 2009) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is accepting grant applications for a total of $1 million in funding for projects aimed at addressing environmental and public health issues in communities. EPA expects to award approximately 40 grants of up to $25,000 each and will accept applications until January 8, 2010. Local governments and non-profit organizations are eligible to apply.

Dura Coat Products, Inc., Joins EPA’s National Partnership for Environmental Priorities
Company commits to reducing lead chromate and polycyclic aromatic compounds from paint formulations
(Huntsville, Ala. – October 23, 2009) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today recognized Dura Coat Products, Inc., as the newest environmental steward to join the National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP). As an EPA partner, Dura Coat will change some of its paint formulations to reduce the use of lead chromate and polycyclic aromatic compounds normally used in paints. Full Story
Southeast Facilities Ordered to Comply with Clean Water Act; Penalties Total More Than $230,000
(ATLANTA – Oct. 20, 2009) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued Consent Agreements and Final Orders (CA/FOs) against 17 entities throughout the Southeast from July 1, through September 30, 2009, for violations of the Clean Water Act (CWA). As part of the settlements, the responsible parties in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee agreed to come into compliance and pay $231,200 in civil penalties. Poster Contest Illuminates Sun-safe Behaviors
Annual competition gives students chance to raise awareness, win prizes; deadline: April 7, 2010
(Atlanta, Ga. – Oct. 21, 2009) -- Students can help raise awareness about sun safety and win prizes by entering the 2010 SunWise with SHADE poster contest. The annual contest is a joint effort by the SHADE Foundation of America, WeatherBug Schools and the Environmental Protection Agency to teach children ways to protect their skin and eyes from excessive sun exposure. Last year’s winner, a 13-year-old from Bernville, Pa., showed a girl talking to her friend about her unhealthy relationship with the sun. Full Story
EPA Region 4 now monitoring for air toxics at 12 schools in the Southeast
School Air Toxics Monitoring Program samples air at 14 schools in the Southeast. Initial data for four schools released today.
