FOUR REGION 4 SITES ADDED TO THE NPL AND THREE PROPOSED
On March. 13, 2012, four hazardous waste sites located in Region 4 will be added to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). Additionally, three other sites are being proposed for addition. The sites added include: Continental Cleaners, Miami, FL., for more information view the NPL listing; Chemfax, Inc., Gulfport, MS., for more information view the NPL listing; Southeastern Wood Preserving Canton, MS., for more information view the NPL listing; and CTS of Asheville, Inc., Asheville, N.C., for more information view the NPL listing. The sites being proposed are, Fairfax St. Wood Treaters, Jacksonville, FL., for more information view the proposed NPL listing; Macon Naval Ordnance Plant, Macon, GA., for more information view the proposed NPL listing; and Holcomb Creosote Co., Yadkinville, N.C., for more information view the proposed NPL listing.

REMEDIAL ACTION OPEN HOUSE - DAVIS TIMBER
On December 8, 2011, EPA will host an open house for the Davis Timber Superfund Site. The purpose of this meeting is to share information about upcoming cleanup activities at the site. The meeting will be held at the Breland Community Center, 79 Jackson Road, Hattiesburg, MS. The public is invited to attend anytime between the hours of 11:00 AM—1:00 PM or during the hours of 5:00 PM—7:00 PM. Please join EPA and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) site team representatives who will be on-hand to answer questions and to address concerns of community members. For further information about the open house sessions or the site, please contact Scott Martin (martin.scott@epa.gov), the Remedial Project Manager or Tonya Whitsett, the Community Involvement Coordinator.

PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT SIGNED AT KERR-MCGEE ANNUAL COMMUNITY MEETING
At a public meeting held on October 27, 2011 to update community stakeholders impacted by the Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp. – Columbus Superfund Site, a signing ceremony was held before meeting attendees. The Honorable Robert E. Smith, Mayor of Columbus; the Reverend Steve M. Jamison, Chair of the Memphis Town Community Action Group (CAG) and Charles L. King, the site’s Remedial Project Manager signed a partnership agreement to develop student leadership through meaningful roles as members of the CAG. EPA RELEASES REPORT FOR FEMA ON OPPORTUNITIES TO OPTIMIZE ASPECT AERIAL SURVEYS
EPA conducted a ground based radiation survey in January 2011 at the Coronet Industries, Incorporated site in Plant City, FL in an effort to evaluate areas potentially affected by former phosphate mining. Concurrently during the field work, EPA conducted specialized aerial surveying over the site in order to determine the impact of different altitudes and different flight passes on data quality and timeliness, to compare aerial data to ground data, and to provide additional site data. This work was funded by FEMA under its Nuclear Incident Response Team (NIRT) Program, pursuant to the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and the Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act of 2002. This aerial survey was conducted by EPA's ASPECT (Aerial Spectral Photometric Environmental Collection Technology) plane.

EPA´s Superfund Program Marks 30th ANNIVERSARY
The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA or Superfund) was signed into law on December 11, 1980 and was created to address the most polluted, complex, uncontrolled or abandoned sites in the United States. Since 1980, EPA has completed construction of cleanup remedies at 67.5 percent of final and deleted sites on the National Priorities List. Accomplishments of the Superfund program are documented in the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response 2010 End of the Year Report.
