Buying a Superfund Site
EPA's Superfund Redevelopment program, in collaboration with the Office of Superfund Remediation Enforcement, has developed a fact sheet that provides answers to a range of questions that a prospective purchaser may have when considering whether to purchase property at a privately owned Superfund site.
The fact sheet outlines the opportunities, resources, responsibilities, and requirements of buying a contaminated or formerly contaminated site. It also explains both the challenges and benefits of acquiring Superfund sites for redevelopment, and provides directions to the resources, funding opportunities, and liability protections EPA offers to prospective purchasers. The guidance also sets forth a framework to deal with the future costs associated with cleanup and property use limitations.
