Superfund Job Training Initiative (SJTI): The graduation ceremony for the second cycle of the Superfund Job Training Initiative (SJTI) was held Friday, July 9th at Denmark Technical College in Barnwell, SC. Thirty-nine candidates will begin their careers as Radiological Control, Material Handlers, and Production Operators as contractors for Savannah River Remediation at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in Aiken, SC. These candidates were selected via a rigorous tryout process where 160 people competed for these positions. The candidates selected completed a 6-week intensive training program at Denmark Tech where they learned physics, math, and general science in preparation.
The SJTI program class was designed to provide access to sustainable, career employment opportunities to under-served communities surrounding the SRS.
The graduation was publicized by a press release and articles in the local press. The president of Denmark Tech, the CEO of SRR, and the Environmental Justice project manager for DOE were present. EPA employees Robert Pope, Rachel Hall, Carolyn Haugabook, and Kyle Bryant were in attendance.
A third cycle is currently being discussed and tentatively scheduled to begin in late 2010.Additional Graduation Photos
