Background

Soil in the area of the Lower Ecorse Creek site which is residential, was contaminated with cyanide, arsenic, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The site was a former wetland that was filled in with waste material. An emergency cleanup in 1993 resulted in hazardous substances removed and contained with a cover in a park area of the site. EPA later completed a remedial investigation, a study of the nature and extent of contamination, and selected a long-term cleanup action for the site. The cleanup which started in April 1998 included digging up about 3,000 cubic yards of soil from about 16 residential lots and disposing the soil offsite. More cyanide contamination was found in the area of a home where work was already performed and the contamination was removed and corrective action was taken in October 2002. Land restrictions and maintenance of the soil cover was part of the cleanup too and in July 2005 the site as deleted from the National Priorities List.

May 2012

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency completed the second five-year review of the Lower Ecorse Creek Dump Superfund site in March 2011. The review was focused on a 1-acre part of the site called the Park Area where waste material was covered with clean fill and left in place. The effectiveness of the institutional control in place (restrictive covenant) was evaluated to ensure that residents continue to be adequately protected from contaminants in the Park Area. There were no recommendations or follow-up actions that relate to the Park Area. The next scheduled review will be in 2016.
