The Milwaukee Die Casting Co. produced aluminum and zinc alloy parts for a variety of industries until 1997. Between 1997 and 2009, some cleanup activities occurred on the site. The owner of the property passed away in 2009, effectively abandoning the site. The property has fallen into disrepair, and EPA has determined that conditions present at the site constitute a threat to public health, welfare, or the environment.

Groundwater, off-site soil, building materials, and the property’s paved areas were extensively sampled over the past few months to better understand the extent and location of contamination and to plan for appropriate waste disposal. Asbestos abatement is expected to begin in January, with building demolition expected to commence shortly thereafter.
During the summer, site stabilization activities occurred, including securing the site with additional fencing and around-the-clock security, removing an unstable trailer, and clearing trees and other vegetation. In September, the property was disconnected from the city of Milwaukee’s storm sewer system, stopping an ongoing discharge of PCBs from the site. The laterals connecting the property to the city storm sewers were cleaned and one extremely contaminated lateral was excavated. Erosion control and stormwater collection measures were established in conjunction with the sewer disconnection.
All hazardous and non-hazardous waste generated from these sampling and clean-up activities has been transported to EPA approved facilities for appropriate treatment and disposal.
