Background

Sauget Area 2 site is made up of four landfills, sites Q, R, S, and P and four backfilled lagoons, site 0. The site is the location of hazardous waste that resulted from treatment and disposal of industrial, municipal, and chemical wastes.

Sauget Area 2 entered into an agreement to perform studies about the nature and extent of contamination at the site and determine cleanup alternatives (remedial investigation/feasibility study). The cleanup plan selected included constructing a barrier wall to capture contaminated ground water and prevent it from reaching the Mississippi River and pumping and treating ground water off site.

Site Updates

March 2013

EPA is conducting a five-year review of the Sauget Area 2 site. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. The cleanup consisted of constructing a 140-foot deep barrier wall and ground water extraction system to stop the release of contaminated ground water to the Mississippi River in the area known as Site R. Together the extraction wells are removing contaminated water and the barrier wall is stopping the flow of contaminants to the Mississippi River. Ground water is treated off-site before discharging to the river. Ground water, sediment and surface water are being monitored for contamination. The review should be complete by August 2013.
