Work continues on the cleanup of underground storage tanks at the former Mixon Buick in East St. Louis, Ill. The cleanup is made possible by $7.4 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from EPA to the state of Illinois.

August 2009

Recovery Act money will be put to good use in East St. Louis, turning an eyesore with leaking underground storage tanks into a bountiful farmers market.

EPA Region 5 and Illinois EPA got the $1.7 million redevelopment project off to a good start at a well-attended event in July 2009. East St. Louis is just one of 28 contaminated locations in Illinois that will receive a total of $7.4 million.

A representative from the local non-profit organization that will develop the land said the new farmers market will provide 40-60 jobs, offer fresh produce at reasonable prices and improve the community’s economic health and the physical health of its residents.
