Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE) is a two-part competitive grant program that offers communities an innovative way to build their local environmental capacity. Grantees work in partnership with EPA to identify, educate and address their community's local environmental risks.

The CARE program provides access to EPA staff and our technical resources. CARE projects help communities better understand their environmental issues, build their local capacity, and address environmental and human health risks. The goal of the CARE program is to build a sustainable effort in those communities for years to come.

Who can apply for a CARE grant?

Local, public nonprofit institutions and organizations
Federally-recognized tribal governments
Native American organizations
Private nonprofit institutions and organizations
Quasi-public nonprofit institutions and organizations (interstate and intrastate)
Local governments
Colleges and universities

Two levels of CARE funding - Level 1 and Level 2 projects:

CARE Level 1 projects help communities identify, understand, rank and prioritize their local concerns. Level 1 projects are funded up to approximately $100,000.
CARE Level 2 projects help communities take their prioritized environmental issues and determine local solutions that can be implemented to achieve locally-led risk reductions. Level 2 projects are funded up to approximately $300,000.
