EPA To Hold Public Availability Meeting
Wright Groundwater Contamination Site, Wright, Kansas
INTRODUCTION
EPA Region 7, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) will hold a public availability meeting on Thursday, October 20, 2005 from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Parish Center to discuss the Wright Groundwater Contamination Site in Wright, Kansas.
Since 1997, Wright residents have been connected to the Dodge City water supply. However, some residents may use water from residential wells for watering lawns and gardens and filling pools. ATSDR has completed a health consultation to determine if non-potable uses of well water are safe for residents. EPA, KDHE and ATSDR representatives will present information from the health consultation and answer questions from the community.
GROUNDWATER MONITORING
Beginning October 17, 2005, EPA contractors will mobilize to Wright to install two additional monitoring wells in the right-of-way along Doll Street east of St. Andrew Street. These wells will better define the extent of groundwater contamination.

SITE BACKGROUND
The Wright Groundwater Contamination Site is located in the city of Wright which is approximately seven miles northeast of Dodge City in Ford County, Kansas. The site was discovered in 1988 when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected in a groundwater sample collected from a private well. From 1989 through 1994, KDHE and EPA conducted investigations to determine the extent of groundwater contamination at the site.
In 1995, the agencies completed an Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) which was shared with the community. A Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study was completed in 1999. Periodic groundwater monitoring continues to be conducted at the site.
