Remedial Investigation of Operable Unit 2 Complete, Annapolis Lead Mine Superfund Site, Annapolis, Iron County, Missouri
INTRODUCTION
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 has completed the Remedial Investigation of Operable Unit 2 (OU-2) at the Annapolis Lead Mine Superfund Site. EPA's Investigation included Big Creek, from the mouth of Sutton Branch Creek downstream to the confluence with the St. Francois River.
The principal investigation for OU-2 was to determine the presence and extent of mine waste contamination, if any, in and immediately adjacent to Big Creek. The investigation was also conducted to determine the best remedy for OU-2. EPA completed field activities for Big Creek in conjunction with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
SITE BACKGROUND
The Annapolis Lead Mine Site operated between 1919 and 1940. The mining area is located approximately .75 miles north of Big Creek, and is approximately one mile east northeast of Annapolis, Missouri. Prior to the EPA removal action, runoff from the mine entered Sutton Branch Creek which flows downstream into Big Creek. The area affected by the mining wastes is considered rural/residential. The area covered in the investigation is a total of approximately 20 miles of stream.
TIME-CRITICAL REMOVAL ACTION
An extensive removal, consisting of an earthen cap over the mine tailings pile has taken place at the northern portion of the site (OU-1). Although not officially complete, the majority of the activity at the site has been completed. The remaining activity needed at the site consist of contouring and erosion repair for the cap, some sediment control actions, and final seeding to establish a vegetative cover. The original waste piles, including some of the scattered mine wastes have been covered with a clay cap. The purpose of the cap is to prevent further erosion of the waste pile, and thus eliminate future spread of contamination from the waste pile to Sutton Branch Creek and Big Creek.
INVESTIGATION OF FOCUS AREA
The investigation of the OU-2 area included stream side and stream sediment sampling. It also included evaluation of qualitative wildlife habitat at each sampling site. A total of 49 sediment samples were taken from Big Creek. These samples were taken from areas that were determined to be where contaminated sediment might accumulate. Contaminant source investigations have shown two primary sources of lead contamination in Big Creek. The Glover Smelter (inactive) has possibly contributed to the contamination of Big Creek approximately 10 miles upstream from Annapolis, and the Annapolis Lead Mine historical mining area has contributed to the minor contamination in Big Creek.ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
EPA is currently compiling a Proposed Plan which will list alternatives for addressing OU-2. After the plan is compiled, EPA will allow public participation before finalizing the plan.
