Radon Conference in March 2011 Engages Region 7 Stakeholders Who Share Ideas to Protect Health
EPA representatives and state officials hosted their annual radon conference March 9 in Columbia, Mo., where key stakeholders shared information, received feedback, and helped direct the next phases of the radon program. Agencies are working together to create a radon risk reduction plan that will help save lives and create safer and healthier homes. Radon is a naturally-occurring, invisible and odorless radioactive gas that leads to more than 21,000 deaths per year. This indoor hazard can be avoided by taking simple steps to test your home for radon and fix if necessary. The conference included sessions about ways to prevent radon from entering the home, strategies to enhance public awareness, and worker health and safety issues. The following agencies were represented: EPA, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Iowa Department of Public Health, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, and American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists.
