Site Description
The Minot Landfill Site, located about one mile southwest of downtown Minot, North Dakota, covers approximately 26 acres. Land use in the Site vicinity is light industrial and residential. Areas southwest of the Site are used for agriculture.
Between 1961 and 1971 the City of Minot, North Dakota operated a landfill, where it received municipal and industrial wastes. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) placed the Site on its National Priorities List (NPL) in 1989.
With all cleanup actions completed at the Site, EPA deleted the Minot Landfill from the NPL in March 1997. A Five-Year Review was completed in September 2006 which determined that the remedy remains protective of human health and the environment. The next Five-Year Review will be conducted by September 2011.
Site Risk
Contaminants of concern at the Site included: benzene and compounds; other volatile organic compounds (VOCs); metals including arsenic, copper and zinc; and phenol and compounds. Studies addressed ground water, surface water, soil, sediment and landfill gases. Studies also evaluated risks to adult residents, occupational workers and children who live, work or play near the site.
| Media Affected | Contaminants | Source of Contamination |
| Ground water, surface water, soil, leachate, solid waste, sediment, air | Benzene and compounds; other volatile organic compounds (VOCs); metals including arsenic, copper and zinc; and phenol and compounds | Landfill operations |
Cleanup Progress
The landfill cleanup involved joint city, state, and federal actions, and included:
- Installing drains to collect leachate (water contaminated by percolating through waste materials buried within the landfill) for conveyance to the City of Minot waste-water treatment facility, and vent landfill gases to protect the clay cap;
- Installing a ground-water monitoring system.
- Implementing "institutional controls" that restrict or control land use within and next to the landfill.
The cleanup occurred during July, August and September 1996. The State of North Dakota and EPA approved the Final Remedial Action Completion Report November 29, 1996.
Community Involvement
Public comment was solicited for the Five-Year Review completed in September 2006. EPA prepares an annual update following each Five-Year Review (see link below). The next five-year review will be completed by the end of September, 2011. EPA, via a public notice, solicits public comment for Five-Year Reviews.
