The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) allows you to obtain information from various agencies of the federal government, including EPA. For general information about the types of information available, how to make a request, and potential costs, please visit EPA's FOIA home page.
EPA and a number of partner agencies are using a shared service - FOIAOnline - to receive FOIA requests electronically. This system allows the public to search previous requests and access responsive documents that have been cleared for release. There are many features available from this system, and if you determine you need to submit a request to a participating agency, please consider creating an account to take advantage of the many features offered by FOIAOnline.
These features include the ability to modify your request, communicate with the agency processing your request, and accessing responsive documents cleared for distribution – all online. Your account will also present you with a dashboard indicating the status of your requests and the ability to file an appeal online. We hope you find FOIAOnline to be a useful tool in accessing your government and the information of interest to you.
Please note that FOIA applies only to federal agency records. All federal agencies, including EPA, are required to make requested records available unless the records are protected from disclosure by one of nine exemptions contained in the federal law. FOIA does not apply to records held by Congress, the courts, businesses, individuals, or by state or local government agencies. Each state has its own public access laws that should be consulted for access to state and local records.
FOIA Requests for EPA Records
You can submit a FOIA request to Region 9, another regional office, or to the National FOIA Office at EPA Headquarters. You can use the same online form for any FOIA request.
For the quickest response, submit your request through FOIAOnline and select the regional office you believe has the records you are seeking. If you do not know where the records exist, select the National FOIA Office to submit your request.
For site-specific information, please check My Property Info or ECHO before filing your FOIA request. These tools allows real estate agents, mortgage banks, engineering and consulting firms, and the public to determine if EPA databases have records on a specific property without filing a formal FOIA request. The results of this search will be identical to the information you would receive by filing a FOIA request with EPA for these records.
FOIA status allows requesters to obtain the status of their FOIA requests.
EPA FOIA Contact Information and Web Sites provide a list of the FOIA contacts in the agency as well as access to regional FOIA Web sites.
Electronic FOIA Request Form is an online form for submitting a FOIA request for EPA documents.
Reference Guide provides information on the procedures for making a FOIA request to EPA.
Policy and Guidance contains the text of the FOIA, EPA's FOIA regulations, FOIA-related reports and other reference material.
MyPropertyInfo searches multiple EPA databases for information on an individual address with results provided in a single printer friendly report.
Annual Reports lists annual reports to DOJ on EPA's FOIA processing activities and contain specific information on EPA’s processing of FOIA requests such as number of requests received in a fiscal year, the number of requests pending at the end of a fiscal year and costs of processing requests.
