EPA's Administrator met with California Governor Brown and Sacramento Mayor Johnson to discuss creating a sustainable economic center in the Sacramento region. During a commencement address at UC Santa Cruz, she discussed her own journey to environmentalism, a career in public service and recent environmental challenges.

Community Partnerships Support Environmental Restoration and Economic Revitalization
In San Jose, the Clean Creeks, Healthy Communities pilot program will reduce pollution and improve water quality along the Coyote Creek; the program will employ the homeless and engage neighbors as stewards of the creek. In San Diego, a $200,000 grant will be used to clean up a pesticide and lead contaminated site to pave the way for the development of 52 units of affordable housing.
Greening Public Transportation
A new set of environmental standards for trains, buses, and ferries will lead the transit industry to sustainability by removing barriers to innovation, supporting smart growth, and increasing transit ridership. The myriad benefits include reduced air and noise pollution and fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
Protecting People from Asbestos
The owner of a San Fernando Valley condominium complex has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for violating asbestos work practice standards during a building renovation; the work caused asbestos to be released into the complex and the surrounding community.
