Note to Self

Intergenerational Description of Joint Project

From Kaly - my mom, Bobbi, works in Environmental, Health and Safety, with a focus on environmental. She is always trying to stress the importance of environmental balance. We enjoy the appreciation of Mother Nature and the gifts she bestows upon us, as do many people.

From Mom - my daughter, Kaly, has always been fascinated with photography. So when I came across the Rachel Carson Sense of Wonder contest, we both immediately thought about how we could combine the photographic element with the importance of protecting our Earth. It was the theme of intergenerational that inspired the importance of the constant reminder to One's Self on not only protecting our Earth, but educating others to do so. Thus, the poem, Note To Self was inspired.

Celebration of Rachel Carson’s Sense of Wonder

From both of us - This project was inspirational for us to complete.
It allowed us to identify and connect with various aspects of nature that are vital to our continued survival! We felt a sense of hope and a sense of urgency. We hope that the message we shared is embraced and passed on. Only through everyone feeling a mutual obligation to protect our Earth, will we be able to successfully do so.

Poem:  Note to Self
A poem by Bobbi and Kathryn Shingleton

Today, the sun rises before my eyes.
An act repeated with synchronicity each day.
Yesterday, someone else watched it rise before me.
Tomorrow, a new generation will witness the redisplay.

Note to self – cherish all things we take for granted.
Note to self- protect and embrace all life.
Note to self – learn from those before us.
Note to self – teach the heart of those who follow.

Note to Self

The foamy sea pounds the surf and tickles my toes.
The power of the water is mysterious and wild.
Yesterday, the sea was sailed by sailors strong.
Tomorrow, it shall be the life giving source for a child.

Note to self – cherish all things we take for granted.
Note to self – protect and embrace all life.
Note to self – learn from those before us.
Note to self – teach the heart of those who follow.

The gentle breeze sings a song of survival.
It blows across the ocean, the lands and life.
Yesterday, the winds blew indiscriminately both gentle and destructive.
Tomorrow, the winds may sing a song of strife.

Note to self – cherish all things we take for granted.
Note to self – protect and embrace all life.
Note to self – learn from those before us.
Note to self – teach the heart of those who follow.

All life depends on simple earthly things.
The sun, the water, and the harvest of the land.
Yesterday, there was abundance for all to relish.
Tomorrow, only we can we ensure enough in land.

Note to self – cherish all things we take for granted.
Note to self – protect and embrace all life.
Note to self – learn from those before us.
Note to self – teach the heart of those who follow.
